What Moves Us

Mozambique is a country rich in natural resources and cultural heritage, with a population of over 34 million people. Yet, it faces significant development challenges that demand urgent and sustained action.
Ranked 182nd out of 193 countries on the 2025 Human Development Index, Mozambique continues to grapple with high levels of poverty—62.8% of its population lives below the poverty line.

Gender inequality remains a pressing issue, with the country placed 127th out of 162 on the Gender Inequality Index. Economic opportunities are limited, reflected in a GDP per capita of just $602.92, which is only 5% of the global average, while the country continues to suffer from the high costs of conflict and climate related disasters, heightening humanitarian assistance needs and internally displacing hundreds of thousands of people.

Cabo Delgado:
A Region in Need of Focused Support Capital Development

The province of Cabo Delgado, located in northern Mozambique, is home to 2.3 million people (INE census, 2017) and is one of the most underserved regions in the country. The challenges are stark and deeply interconnected. Illiteracy rates are alarmingly high – 36.7% for men and 52.4% for women (UNICEF, 2022). More than half of children aged 5 to 17 have never attended school (UNICEF, 2022) and the region has the highest school dropout rate in Mozambique at 20.8% (UNICEF, 2022). The consecutive cyclones have destroyed a total of 2000 classrooms in a province where schools were already overcrowded.

Malnutrition affects 45% of children under five (INE, 2020), and only 14.9% of households have access to electricity (INE, 2017), limiting access to basic services and opportunities for economic growth.

These figures are not just statistics. They represent real lives and people striving for a better future. Our areas of engagement – Human Capital Development and Economic Diversification – are designed to address some of the critical systemic challenges and we believe that by investing in human capital and strengthening local institutions, we can help build a more equitable and prosperous future for the people of Cabo Delgado and the region.
