Construction and equipping of The Murrebue Maternity Ward

In 2025, the Mozambique LNG Foundation relaunched a critical health investment in Pemba: the construction and full equipping of a new maternity ward.   Included as part of the upgrade of the local Murrébué Health Center, in Mecufi District, to a Type I facility funded by the Government, the construction of the maternity ward, previously halted following USAID’s exit, has now resumed through a renewed partnership with the Cabo Delgado Provincial Health Directorate.

This maternity will provide essential maternal and neonatal care to 30,000 residents of Murrébué, ensuring safer deliveries, improved emergency response capacity, and expanded primary healthcare services for women and newborns.

By strengthening local health infrastructure, the initiative directly contributes to national priorities for reducing maternal and child mortality and improving access to quality care in underserved districts of Cabo Delgado.
