As part of the Community Health Agents Training Program led by the Provincial Health Directorate of Cabo Delgado, 200 Agentes Polivalentes Elementares (APEs) completed, on September 21, their requalification into full Agentes Polivalentes de Saúde (APS), at a ceremony held in Pemba, at the Pemba Institute of Health Sciences.

These agents had received their initial training in 2019, in their home districts, through a three-module program. This requalification took place over three months at the Pemba Institute of Health Sciences, covering ten additional modules — including Portuguese, mathematics, and computer literacy — along with a clinical internship at a health facility.
The program is part of the Community Health Subsystem Strategy, set by the Government of Mozambique to strengthen access to healthcare in rural areas in Cabo Delgado.
This was the first cohort to be requalified. Of the province’s 672 APEs, 472 now remain to be requalified. A second cohort of 200 agents is planned before year-end, which will reduce this gap to 272.
At the ceremony, the Provincial Health Director, Dr. Magid Sabune, told the graduates: “A responsible and hardworking APS contributes to a healthy community.”
